Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says the Champions League win of last season does not make them the best team in Europe.
The Reds’ 2-0 victory over Tottenham in June in Madrid gave Klopp his very first trophy with the club.
They start their title defence against Napoli in their Group E opener on Tuesday (20:00 BST), and Klopp says that his side cannot live on past success.
“There are a great deal of great teams out there and you have to prove that constantly,” said the German.
“We may not qualify as the best team in Europe because Manchester City are the best team in the world – that’s the identical planet, I heard.
“Last year, we were really good. I am not too convinced we had been the best group in Europe, but we were really good in the ideal moments and that’s why we won the Champions League.”
Liverpool were paired with Napoli in the group stage last year.
Klopp says that his side cannot afford to let their performance level fall in any sport in the contest of this season with teams inclined to get additional motivation against the reigning champions.
“Last year, we heard from 1 game to another game and we must use that expertise, as if we do not defend with all we’ve then we don’t have any chance against Napoli. They’re so powerful,” he further added.
“They’re stubborn in a favorable manner. They play soccer, lines break they have counter-attacks that are good they are imaginative. When I analyse Napoli I enjoy it. I like to watch them.”
Captain Jordan Henderson echoed the thoughts of his manager by stressing that the players have set last season’s Champions League success to the back of their minds.
“Last season was last season,” stated that the 29-year-old England midfielder.
“We can enjoy expertise from the campaign and, even if we can take that into this effort, ultimately we believe we could still do a great deal of things better and everything is possible ”
Divock Origi, who scored the next goal against Spurs, did not traveling with Liverpool into Naples. Teenager Rhian Brewster made the trip.
Left-back Andy Robertson picked up a knock at the weekend but is expected to be fit for the game.
Midfielder Naby Keita and goalkeeper Alisson remain sidelined, though the latter can go back to training.
