Kyler Murray had a very tough go in his second preseason game as a pro, departing the game down 26–0 and finishing the night with adverse yardage. Murray wasn’t fine — but had been everything as bad as it seemed, or is there some reason for hope?
Kyler Murray had a rough Thursday night, along with also the world wide web is freaking out. It all started out so well last week. Murray played only one series in his first game as a pro, completing his first six passes and leading his Arizona Cardinals to the border of scoring position prior to departing.
Murray had a considerably worse outing Thursday from the Oakland Raiders. He performed a lot of their first halfand by the time he left, Murray along with the Cards trailed the Raiders 26 to zip.
And the internet, naturally, melted.
Let’s start with the harm. There’s a lot of it.
Murray played drives from the Raiders. These drives acquired 13, -6, -10, and -10 yards. Absolutely, Murray played with most of the first half, which makes the game almost exactly halfway through the second quarter. The Cardinals had only 8 minutes and 21 seconds of ownership from four possessions united at the time. In 15 offensive plays, they blended to shed 13 yards.
Murray ran once for four yards, a built run on his very first play from scrimmage. He completed just 3 of 8 passes for just 12 yards, a measly 1.5 yards a week. Murray had a 45.8 quarterback rate for the day. He had three penalties himself — a delay of match and two false starts — and was sacked twice. One of these was his final play of the afternoon, an 11-yard sofa at the end zone for a safety that ended his night. When he left the game, the Cardinals were trailing 26–0.
At the middle of the second quarter –into the RAIDERS.
Calling Murray’s results awful is a insult to the word ugly. But was it as bad as it looked?
Let us dig a little deeper in the conditions. There’s some good and some bad. The poor? Murray played all his time with both David Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald on the area, so it is not like he did not have any talent . Fitz and also DJ shared three targets. They caught one of them and lost three yards. Welp. Johnson rushed four times for six yards. Loads of single digits.
The Cardinals had only one first down in Murray’s time on the area. It came from a defensive penalty, illegal hands to the facearea. Remember how Murray left the game down 26–0? On another play the Cards conducted, backup QB Brett Hundley threw a touchdown. Arizona outscored Oakland 26–7 with no Murray.
However there was not in Murray’s prefer also. The run game could not get anything going, along with the offensive line set in a miserable performance. Oakland blitzed Murray early and often, hoping to induce the newcomer into rapid conclusions, and he had been throwing off his back all game.
Arizona’s four drives started around line, 25, 24, along with the 10. He faced a 3rd and 11, 3rd and 12, 3rd and 13, 3rd and 17, as well as 3rd and 25 on various forces. That’s a great deal of awful field positions and disadvantageous situations for any quarterback to be in, let alone one as green as Murray. The 1 time Murray faced a 3rd and short, David Johnson ripped off a big run to get a first down… and got called back on a holding penalty. The Cardinals simply could not grab any rhythm.
The simple truth is that any quarterback would have fought in Murray’s location. The Arizona offensive lineup was awful, and Murray had a guy or two in his head within seconds after the snap nearly every play. He played every snap together with his back against his own goal line and had zero plays at a spot where the offense had an advantage. He did not perform nicely, per se, but couple of quarterbacks could have.
Murray’s match was not an indictment in his height or his arm, nor his conclusions, nor his future. If anything, it might have been an indictment of Kliff Kingsbury’s offense — though that fights to maintain up if the Cardinals scored 26 points later Murray left. Possibly the Raiders defense is just that great. Maybe it was just four bad drives.
More probable than anything else is the fact that Kingsbury is probably keeping things pretty vanilla from the preseason. Why roll out your finest plays when the games do not matter and give your winning script? There is no reason to run Murray and put him in danger with nothing at stake.
Murray wasn’t good Thursday night but that he was not bad either. He just never had much of a chance to start with. It is far too soon to draw any conclusions.
Murray stays the significant Rookie of the Year preferred, +165 in Bovada. The Cardinals are +600 to create the match, or +10000 to acquire the Super Bowl, in case you are feeling lucky. If you are a little more bearish on Arizona’s chances, they are +750 to finish with the worst record in the NFL. Happy betting.
