Marcus Rashford impressed in Manchester Uniteds 1-1 draw scoring the opening goal before Adam Lallana equaliser, but is he the perfect man to lead the line for the side of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?
A debate was prompted by his performance on Super as Gary Neville, Graeme Souness, Roy Keane and Jose Mourinho assessed Rashfords suitability and gave.
Regardless of the eye-catching display at Old Trafford of Rashford, Souness was no doubt that Manchester United need to make a proven goalscorer to substitute Romelu Lukaku, that had been offered to Inter Milan through the summer.
He is one day, but he is not the final article at this time, he explained Rashford. He has not scored enough goals in the Premier League for Manchester United to hang their hat on him being the guy thats going to take them back to wherever they need. He needs help.
Hes everything to be a player, but this season he has been requested to be the primary man. Its the hardest place. Hes not prepared to fill that job at the moment. He needs assistance. Like the boy [Daniel] James will need help.
It is too much for him. It is too much for any 21-year-old you might title. You cant possess a 21-year-old as the main man.
Strikers are the hardest things to find. That is the reason why they cost the most money. If you can land a person that has you 25 or 30 goals a year, and hes not precisely what you want, you just take him anyway and construct the rest. You are fighting for goals, thats the first thing you need.
Where Man United are now, they will take nothing!
Mourinho knows Rashford better than having worked closely with him. He insisted the 21-year-olds experience is not an issue, instead saying that he is simply a lot more effective from the broad positions.
I really dont think he is a 9 that may play with a minimal block or that may be a target man, he said. I believe he is a man of motion, who will strike space and then attack defenders with the ball at his feet.
I really dont think hes a pure 9, therefore it is dependent upon the version of drama. If Ole wants to play the way he played I think Rashford is the striker because of him.
Hes young, but he is experienced. At 21 years old, he likely has more games in the Premier League, in the World Cup at 24, at the Europa League, compared to a few players at the Champions League.
So, for mepersonally, the purpose isnt his age, it is his qualities. He is a very good player in certain models of play, in some places. However, as a target man I do not believe hes got the 30 goals a high striker has.
For me, he will get better and better and improved behaving the way he did today, playing against the left side, playing with a goal person.
But for him to function as goal man in matches where Manchester United are all still dominant, playing against defensive teams, against non blocks, I think that its hard for him.
Neville, however, insisted Rashford could develop into a successful No 9, including the priority for Manchester United shouldnt simply be to deliver in almost any striker who can score goals – but a person who will be the ideal match for the manner Solskjaer wishes to play.
Hes still young, Neville said of Rashford. I consider [Roberto] Firmino when he first came to England, I look [Mohamed] Salah if he was at Chelsea, I consider [Sadio] Mane. Players have to develop into what they will become.
I believe United desire a striker like Firmino, such as [Heung-Min] Son at Tottenham. I believe [Solskjaer] needs that type of player.
I dont believe he wants a normal striker whos going to be a Lukaku or a [Diego] Costa. I really dont think he is searching for this type. I believe he is searching for a more cellular type in a two or a front three.
I think this club has had strikers who will play pairs, that donate off the ball.
I will be certain about Ruud van Nistelrooy. We won less championships with him at Wayne Rooney.
He was nowhere near as good a finisher as Ruud or as good a striker as Ruud, but the team became better. And that is my point, I really dont think Ole needs a striker like that; I believe he wants a cellular striker.
Neville used Jurgen Klopp and Christian Bentekes instance in Liverpool. He pitched him from the club because he did not match his style of play, he explained. Oles done exactly the same using Lukaku, and Lukaku is a far better player than Benteke.
Ole isnt going to sign a striker because he scores goals, because Lukaku could have done that.
For Keane, the remedy was simple. Just go and receive [Harry] Kane from Tottenham, he explained. Easy. They are in disarray. Simply go and get him.
As for Rashford, Keane theorised that the 21-year-old does not want to be the most important man, including that he is better suited to a function of Manchester United.
Lots of gamers do not need to be the primary striker, they do not want to be the main man. I believe he wants to play wider positions. His power is his speed and he could affect the game more coming out of about and clearly wide the counter-attack.
It is still a huge problem, that he does not score enough objectives. I do not believe hes that physical presence, if you wish to be the main striker at Man United. I really dont think he is great with his back to goal.
But hes a talented kid. He is learning his trade. However, the pressure on him at the past couple of months, I dont think he has dealt with it well since he does not wish to be the most important striker.
