As the games ticked by and then he waited to get a first win, there should have been times when Michael Duff wondered why he did not only stay at Burnley.
Cheltenham Town, his first job in direction was arrived in by duff also had to wait until his League Two game accountable for a win. Now, just under 12 weeks after, the team are at the top seven and also now looking up.
His departure from Turf Moor is looking like a very good choice.
I probably needed a job for life in Burnley, Duff, a two-club guy who spent his entire playing career at Cheltenham and Burnley before linking the Clarets coaching staff after indulging in 2016, informs Sky Sports. I had an unbelievable connection with the team and the manager and that I had access into the first team, so it was not like I was just with the U23s.
But a whole lot of things lined me up. The family wanted to come home and the kids were to do it. I had two nightclubs in a career that is very long and it felt like the ideal point to go back to where I started. I didnt use for it I was come to by Cheltenham and that I knew at some stage also have a go and I needed to stick my head. I didnt want to arrive at 55 or 50 and thinkI could have done that. I never get a different job and may find the sofa, but I understand now that if I fail, I have had a go at it.
You will find several soul-searching moments during that poor run of why I had come , and I will always be appreciative of the way little pressure there was on me from the club. I know in the clubs, managers have been sacked within eight or nine matches, especially when youve come from an U23s background. But any stress I felt came purely from inside.
Cheltenham had grabbed a few cup wins in EFL Trophy and the FA Cup under Duff, however it was his first victory in the league at mid-November that saw items begin to develop. Their house form, in particular, has been particularly impressive and theyre unbeaten in their past 16 games at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium.
Duff arrived 13 months ago using management fundamentals and his coaching, but has learned that those matters can change when youre the man at a center.
I believed I had my own ideas of how I needed to come in and play, he explained. I wished to really go 4-4-2 and almostBurnley-fy the location, if you want, getting them organised and difficult to conquer.
But I didnt win a game in my 10 and you realise you need to try out something different. So we ended up going the other way, because it suited the players we 17, playing 3-5-2. We perform with a really fashion, normally with approximately 550-600 passes a game, and it is a whole lot in this level.
I thought I would have them organised and more in a reflection of me, but Im actually rather enjoying watching them perform. Although I am not dumb enough to believe that if you play with 500 moves and get defeated every week you are likely to keep your work!
They could play with a different formation and fashion to Sean Dyches Premier League outfit, but there are other ways that Duff hasBurnley-fied Cheltenham. The former guardian has trimmed a squad to make sure theyre a unit , all willing to work and fight together.
We had 29 players once I arrived and then I brought in Luke Varney to ensure it is 30, said Duff. It had been too many and you also cant keep everybody happy. On my day we did an 11 vs 11 and we all had seven players! Just how are you likely to maintain them motivated?
Obviously when that occurs, whether you want it or not, therell be two or three sad faces and theyll be sucking the life from the dressing room. Even if they dont mean to take action, it is going to be with an impact on the folks alongside them. Its just a human thing.
This was a small risk because we had a couple of injuries at the onset of the season and it left us down to the bare bones, but it just makes it more manageable. How can you keep players alive and inspired when they can see four players ahead of them? Youre asking them to do things but there is. With a team that is smaller , the players who nt started will understand theyre just one injury, a bad defeat or somebody losing form away from getting into the group, so they have to be on it all of the time.
It keeps them living in training and retains the professionalism and criteria better around the place. The most prosperous teams I have been part of as a participant normally came when there was a fantastic core of players that all were pulling in precisely the exact identical direction. It is difficult to do that if you have too many.
Duff worked closely at Burnley for years and its apparent that his boss, both by his period as a participant and as a trainer, has had a huge effect on his or her
He was brilliant in that 10-game run and that he rang me more than anyone else, said Duff. I have a fantastic relationship with himnot only as a player, in which I won two promotions, but then also when I stepped across the other side.
He brought me into his coaching installment and demanded me in everything. I had half an hour every Saturday at his office when the coaching staff would go outside together with him, and I would only pick his brains nuggets of advice, that were invaluable because he is so open and fair. In that awful run if he could help me whatsoever he would always call me up and see, and even now he does.
Our very first home game of this season was in precisely the exact same moment as Burnleys, and later I went to my office just after the match and watched a message on my phone , just after they had beaten Southampton 3-0. It only shows what sort of man hes that theyd won their first Premier League match of the season and on us beating Scunthorpe, then he text me straight away to say well done. Hes a bloke who it is clearly very good at what he does, and receives it.
There were other people as well but I have probably spoken to him more than anybody else in the previous 12 months.
But can Duff watch himself copying a single day handling and Dyches accomplishments at the highest level? He climbed into the top flight from non-league, and he expects he could do something .
I know I am not going to get Cheltenham to the Premier League, he said. I have my own aims of what I want to accomplish and where I wish to be, but the primary method of doing this is to keep doing nicely with Cheltenham. The club will the players earn more cash and we get attendances, When I do . When the players are currently doing on the pitch then it reflects well on everyone.
I know Ill never get to where I really need to be if the club does not keep winning the next game. Is a liar but the aspiration was not there, although it took till I was 30 as a participant.
I clearly didnt go shouting it from the rooftops when I had been playing at the Hellenic League because people would have thought I was psychological, but it does not mean its not inside you. You only need to keep working and striving and hopefully get a bit of luck along the manner.
