New Reading supervisor Mark Bowen watched his side catch a Sky Bet Championship triumph over Preston in the Madejski Stadium.
Centre-back Matt Miazga struck deep into stoppage time since the game seemed to be petering out into a goalless draw.
Victory sees the Royals move two points clear at the bottom three since they finished a winless league streak dating back to August 24.
Bowen, 55, took over on Monday – his initial role for a director – to replace the sacked Portuguese Jose Gomes.
Readings sporting director, he had spent most of his 20-year training profession as No 2 to former Wales international Mark Hughes.
Bowen inherited a team which were under Gomes, without a win in six league games, including five beats.
Preston came to the match in third position in the table and were unbeaten in eight Championship matches, winning five of them.
The visitors began the brighter, with all Andy Hughes when going forwards on the left flank, inducing problems.
In the six-yard area, Tom Barkhuizen mis-controlled the chunk from a low Hughes cross and allowed Reading goalkeeper Rafael to collect comfortably.
Preston continued to press on but the bodies were narrowly missed by a dangerous free-kick from captain Paul Gallagher .
Reading got going in attack, using Jordan Obita releasing striker George Puscas that was left-back, however the international tried an ambitious volley .
John Swift fired which Declan Rudd did well to fool around a pole.
When Barkhuizen set off on a mazy run along the right flank, only to finish with a weak attempt at Rafael preston responded.
Pele responded for its hosts, sending to the North End box at a center that was superb low. Puscas arrived to meet it but could handle only the smallest of touches and the opportunity went begging.
Rudd made strong saves to twice deny Ovie Ejaria although reading upped the tempo.
Preston should have gone in front and started a attack first in the second half.
Darnell Fisher crossed from the right and David Nugent, totally unmarked, nodded into the grasp of Rafael.
He sliced over a opportunity that was clear in an Andy Yiadom center although ejaria again proved problematic.
However, Reading snatched it when Miazga followed up to net from close range after Rudd have rescued out of Jordan Obita.
