General Summary of Sports Betting in Nevada
Ah, fabulous Las Vegas, crown jewel of Nevada, the only state in America where betting on sports and horse races was lawful…until lately. That changed, of course, in May 2018, if the Supreme Court of the United States overturned the skilled and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), that opened the sports betting door to every other nation.
If you are a sports fan or a gambler, odds are you’ve been to Las Vegas to partake at the watching of, and gambling on, sporting events. It’s common for groups of bettors and fans to travel to Las vegas during the NCAA March Madness championship, the Super Bowl, as well as routine Sundays during football season specifically to watch and bet on sportsbetting. But why was sports gambling enabled only in the state of Nevada? For the response, we refer back to PASPA, the 1992 bill that prohibited sports betting expansion in each state in the US — except Nevada, that was headquartered in. It was because of this that all the years, Las Vegas was synonymous with sports betting.
Think about it: sports posts or talk shows frequently refer to groups like favorites or underdogs based on”Vegas.” In a non-sports betting context, sports culture in the US has been centered around vegas, simply because Nevada was the only place where wagering online sports was legal.
Regardless of the fact that Delaware, New Jersey, Mississippi and West Virginia have joined Nevada as countries offering regulated and legal wagering on sports, Las Vegas is still king when it come to sports betting. It will still be years before other states can build the infrastructure up and air Las Vegas has spent decades cultivating.

Nevada’s Sports Betting History
To get the full picture of sports gambling in Nevada and how it was the only US state that offered legal sports gambling for almost 70 years, we must return to 1931. On March 19, 1931, then Nevada Governor Fred Balzar signed Bill 98 to legislation, which legalized wide-open gaming for the first time in any US nation’s history. This event put Las Vegas on course to becoming the sports gambling haven we all know and love today.
Even though gaming in Nevada was legalized in 1931, sports gambling largely remained an illegal, underground action until 1949, when Nevada legalized sports gambling and horse gambling. In 1951, the federal government attached a 10% tax on legal sportsbooks, which caused lots of valid sportsbooks to close because they couldn’t handle the tax fee. Others maintained into the illegal underground, or used workarounds, like writing tickets for lesser amounts than they were really worth.
It was only in 1974 that the federal government relaxed its taxation on sports betting, lowering the rate to 2%. More legitimate sportsbooks began to emerge, and two decades later in 1976, the version upon which many contemporary sportsbooks are built opened up: the Stardust sportsbook boasted six giant TV screens and luxurious seating for up to 300 patrons.
In 1982, the national government further reduced its tax rate all the way down to 0.25%, which is when sports betting in vegas truly took off. Four years later in 1986, The Hilton opened its Superbook, an even bigger version of the Stardust. This website is currently Westgate, which is home to what is broadly recognized as the best sportsbook in Las Vegas.
Sports gambling in Nevada in 2018 is alive and well, despite PASPA no more blocking other countries. Nearly every casino in Las Vegas includes a sportsbook, with a number featuring big, stadium-like areas with large screens and plush seating places.
Las Vegas has also adopted the Digital Age, with many sportsbooks offering their traces on gambling apps. Some operators are boasting between 25-50% of the manage comes out of programs. Regardless of where or how you like to wager on sports, Las Vegas is still the sports betting capital of the united states.

Is DFS legal in Nevada? Can we see any hybrid games offered in the near future?
DFS companies are currently unable to work in Nevada, but the winds of change may be coming. DraftKings, that has already established a successful digital sportsbook in New Jersey, has stated it needs to open an office in Las Vegas. If and when this happens, you can be sure of their plans to get into the sports betting market.
In other states where the two sports gambling and DFS are authorized, we believe there will shortly be exciting DFS-sports betting hybrid products. RotoGrinders’ own Cal Spears recently told The Athletic (paywall) about the Sort of crossover contests we could see:
“Say, on a Sunday, you create 15 different NFL bets, but you make them contrary to 100,000 others,” Spears said. “Sort of like a parlay, but against others. If you pick the Patriots (like a 7-point preferred ), you strike for 1 point, but if you pick their opponent (like a 7-point underdog) you get 7 points. Then add up all of the points. That is a really complicated thing to do, because you have 100,000 concurrent users hitting on your server, which makes teams, hitting your database but (DraftKings and FanDuel) are already set up to do that. I think they may get an advantage running different formats which other people would struggle to warrant even writing the first line of code ”
This kind of thing seems like it could be a blast in Las Vegas on an NFL Sunday, or through a day of March Madness, so here is hoping DFS finally makes a triumphant return to Nevada.
