Manchester United win 5-3 on penalties.
Manchester United defeated a scare against Rochdale, winning a Carabao Cup penalty shootout 5-3 after being held to a 1-1 draw in normal time in Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had wasted a number of chances before Mason Greenwood (68) scored his second senior target with a thunderous work.
However, Rochdale got themselves back to the third-round tie perhaps not long after as 16-year-old Luke Matheson (75) levelled for the visitors to ultimately send the match to penalties.
It turned out to be a from United – who performed their spot-kicks all – while some miss from midfielder Jimmy Keohane watched Rochdale exit the contest.
United will travel to Chelsea in the fourth round of this Carabao Cup.
United dominated the first half but wasted a number of opportunities. They were kept out by some marvellous rescue from Rochdale goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, together with his two stops arriving from the 19th minute. He jumped to deny Tahith Chong before a shot from Andreas Pereira landed in his arms. He had been at it again seven minutes later until Marcos Rojo nodded wide by a Pereira corner, because he maintained out a header from Jesse Lingard.
United’s best opportunity of the opening period came in the 35th minute if the returning Paul Pogba wasted a chance. A pass floated for the Frenchman, who ran forward to match, but he directed his header from six yards out.
Greenwood could have spanned a goal five minutes however his strike was kept out by another Sanchez stop. Not long afterwards, Lingard led a header wide of the post.
It had been Rochdale who had a opportunity early in the second half. Former Man Utd academy product Oliver Rathbone enjoyed before cutting the ball back into Callum Camps inside a area. However, his shot was hacked off the line by a bicycle kick from Aaron Wan-Bissaka in a piece of defending.
United finally made a breakthrough from Greenwood at the 68th minute with a rocket. Before Lingard slipped the 17-year-old in down the straight of this 21, the hosts played with around the region. Prior hammering a shot into the back of the net for his second goal he nipped.
But seven minutes later, Rochdale obtained themselves degree. Rathbone collected a pass on the left, before looping a shot into the atmosphere controlling it under pressure from Wan-Bissaka. It did not seem like United, until prior to celebrating Matheson came storming in to flick the ball home would be troubled by it.
United continued to drive for the winner, but had been unable to make the breakthrough since the tie went to a penalty shoot-out. The hosts went and scored each of their penalties, but a collapse from Keohane, who watched Rochdale’s second kick rescued by Sergio Romero sealed their exit.
This was another amazing performance from Greenwood up-front as he continues to show hints of what he can bring about Manchester United. While he’d miss a few chances, he even still took his target and it was a strike that defeat a goalkeeper.
He scored a trendy penalty in the shootout, not revealing any flash and he should be pleased with his operation.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was amazed with their opponents Rochdale as well as 17-year-old Greenwood while it was not the functionality from Manchester United.
He said”Penalty shoot-outs can go either way. I believed Rochdale were excellent, we researched and analysed them and they’re a little unorthodox, but they are confident and the way that they set up their team, it was fantastic tonight to watch them.
“We are through, so we’re content with this and that is one also. The next is the lovers, they have been unbelievable and the third were our penalties. They had been written and the boys enjoyed taking them.
“You always need some quality in the past third and also we lacked that sometimes. They defended well, of course we should have scored quite a few objectives, but we have talked about it many times that when you do not take the chances, it is definitely going to be a challenging night but we’ve got Mason who knows where the aim is.
“He also scored a fantastic goal now too and he’s a confident finisher but you have got to rememberthat he’s 18 next week so give him time and he will be an excellent player.”
Rochdale manager Bryan Barry-Murphy was pleased with how his side performed at Old Trafford at what he called the”adventure of a life”.
He explained:”I think that it was a really successful evening for us. If we are trying to become perfectionists, you’d say we would want to win the tie and then move through and not observe being pumped out of the competition but our lads gave absolutely everything inside this competition right.
“For the guys on the pitch and on the sides, it was the adventure of a lifetime and one they’ll hope to replicate as they progress through their professions.”
It’s a huge game for Man Utd as they host Arsenal on Monday Night Football following 28, before traveling to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League. On Saturday, they host Wycombe at League One for Rochdale.
